Read This if You Hate Getting Your Picture Taken

Are you one of those people who feels uncomfortable when getting their pictures taken?

You’re not alone!

Which is exactly why I put these tips together just to help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera as you prepare for your photoshoot.

Tips If You Hate Getting Your Picture Taken

Work with a Professional Photographer

Sure, anyone with a camera can take a picture, but working with a professional is what can make you look and feel at your best both in front of the camera and in the final image. A professional has worked with multiple people, families, professionals, etc. and know these things that ammeters don’t:

  • Making your session feel comfortable and fun

  • Watching for the small details

  • Posing you to show off your best side and angles

  • Getting your best, real smile

  • How to make the best recommendations for what you need

Wear Attire That Fits YOU

Your clothes can contribute a lot to your sense of confidence. Whether you are planning for your headshots, a family session, or something different, you want to choose clothing that helps you feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful. Don’t wear something you normally wouldn’t that doesn’t feel like you.

And if you need help choosing, snap a picture of your options or bring a couple ideas to your shoot and we’ll help you choose!

Feel Comfortable in Your Space

Choosing a location is totally up to you! And the best part is that we can design your session to fit the location you want and get the photos you need! I’ve done headshots, family sessions, and even boudoir shoots in my client’s homes because it helps to make them feel at-ease as well as have anything they might need right at their fingertips! Maybe you don’t want anyone else around or watching while you’re having your pictures taken. We have lots of options for you, including right in your home.

Relax Before Your Photoshoot

If you feel nervous or are full out dreading your photoshoot, here’s what I recommend. Make a day of it to feel relaxed and pampered! Take the day (or at least the morning) off to feel relaxed and not rushed before your shoot. You might choose to get your hair and make-up done professionally. After your photoshoot, celebrate yourself — take yourself out to lunch or a good massage. The more relaxed you are, the easier your body posture and smile will reflect that and make for the best photo.

Play Music

This is a tool I love to use! If you are feeling nervous, use your phone to play your favorite song or playlist. Music can help make your photoshoot fun and relax you, or even make you feel confident by playing songs that make you feel strong and powerful! Take an extra 5-minutes to listen and calm your nerves through the sound of your music. This works every time!

Communicate with Your Photographer

There’s probably a specific reason why you hate getting your pictures taken. There’s nothing to feel ashamed about when you grow uncomfortable before a camera. I assure you, your photographer is not here to judge you, but rather to help you feel and look your best! (We are always our own worst critic and we all have our own flaws we wish didn’t exist.) One of the best things you can do is open up and communicate these things to your photographer.

  • Have you put on some extra weight? Great, there are ways we can pose you that are slimming!

  • Did you wake up with a pimple? No problem, we can spot correct when we edit.

  • Do you like your hair a certain way? Perfect, show us how you like it so we can make sure to set it for your photos!

  • Feeling self-conscious about a body part? That’s totally fine!

Let your photographer know so we are aware how we can help you look and feel your best so you LOVE your photo!

You’d be surprised how many times I’ve heard, “WOW, that actually looks great!!!” to someone who didn’t like having their picture taken. It’s all in the details.
